2020 Helsinki Tournament profits used to prevent emissions
The Helsinki Save Pond Hockey Tournament’s profits grew again this year to a record high of €14,000.00. This is thanks to the participation of all the great players, teams, sponsors and partners! Special thanks also to PME Records & JP x AL stars and customers of the online jersey auction. Same as last year, Save Pond Hockey decided to use the profits to purchase emissions allowances from the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) and keep them off the market. Our donation will concretely prevent 350 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent! The transaction is handled by the Finnish company CO2esto Oy.

The idea behind this emissions cap-and-trade system is that the EU sets an annual limit (cap) on total emissions for the entire emissions trading sector, which decreases annually. The EU ETS covers more than 11,000 industrial plants and about 45% of total EU greenhouse gases. Businesses can then trade in emission allowances. By purchasing and keeping emission allowances off the market, the amount of free allowances in the ETS decreases and therefore heavy industry has to reduce its emissions faster than the prescribed cap. This mechanism through the EU ETS is not carbon compensation, it is a truly additional way of preventing emissions.
As the world finally shouts out about the climate emergency, many different emissions compensation methods have emerged on the market. Save Pond Hockey believes these are absolutely necessary, but at the same time deserve an unbiased evaluation of their effectiveness. For example, the Finnish NGO Finnwatch, relying on a crowdfunding campaign, is building a project that will examine the various methods of compensation.
By purchasing EU emission allowances and keeping them off the EU ETS market, Save Pond Hockey is effectively preventing emissions from happening. Coupled with emissions prevention, Save Pond Hockey wants to underline the importance of larger systemic solutions alongside individual lifestyle changes in the fight against climate change. In the end, only concrete emissions reductions matter.

Helsingin turnauksen tuotoilla mitätöitiin päästöoikeuksia
Helsingin Save Pond Hockey -turnauksen tuotot kasvoivat tänä vuonna taas ennätyslukemiin n. 14 000,00 euroon. Kiitokset tästä kaikille mahtaville pelaajille, joukkueille, sponsoreille ja yhteistyökumppaneille! Erityiskiitokset myös PME Records & JP x AL -staroille ja –pelipaitahuutokauppa-asiakkaille. Save Pond Hockeyn hallitus päätti edellisvuoden tapaan ostaa tuotoilla pois päästöoikeuksia EU:n päästökaupasta (EU-ETS). Summalla saatiin mitätöityä jopa 350 tonnia hiilidioksidipäästöjä. Konkreettiset transaktiot hoiti suomalainen CO2esto Oy (2737841-7).

Päästökaupan ideana on, että EU määrittää koko päästökauppasektorille vuosittaisen kokonaispäästöjen ylärajan eli päästökaton (cap), joka laskee vuosittain. Päästökaupassa on mukana yli 11 000 tehdasta ja voimalaitosta, kattaen 45 % EU:n kokonaispäästöistä. Yritykset käyvät kauppaa (trade) päästöoikeuksista. Ostamalla päästöoikeuksia markkinoilta, päästökaupassa vapaana olevien päästöoikeuksien määrä laskee ja raskas teollisuus joutuu vähentämään päästöjään määrättyä päästökattoa nopeammin, kts. kuva. Tämä EU-ETS pohjautuva kompensointi on aidosti lisäinen tapa estää päästöjen synty.
Maailman vihdoin huutaessa ilmastohätäänsä, markkinoille on syntynyt useita erilaisia päästöjen kompensointimenetelmiä, joita Save Pond Hockeyn mielestä ehdottomasti tarvitaan, mutta jotka samalla ansaitsevat puolueettomat arvioinnit omasta vaikuttavuudestaan. Esimerkiksi kansalaisjärjestö Finnwatch rakentelee joukkorahoituskampanjan vivuttamana projektia, jossa eri kompensaatiomenetelmät läpivalaistaan. EU:n päästöoikeuksia ostamalla Save Pond Hockey onnistuu faktisesti estämään päästöjä syntymästä. Mitätöinnin myötä Save Pond Hockey haluaa myös alleviivata systeemisten ratkaisujen (esim. Pantsar & Keronen) merkitystä kestävien kulutusvalintojen rinnalla taistelussa ilmastonmuutosta vastaan. Vain todellisilla päästövähennyksillä on lopulta merkitystä.
